Wentelteefjes is essentially a type of French toast made with bread that has been dipped in a mixture of eggs, milk, and sugar and then fried in butter until golden brown. The history of Wentelteefjes can be traced back to at least the 17th century when it was a popular dish among Dutch sailors who would make it on board ships using their rations of bread, eggs, and milk. Wentelteefjes was also made as a way to use old bread.

Despite its humble origins, Wentelteefjes has become a cultural icon in the Netherlands, and it is still enjoyed by many people today as a tasty and nostalgic reminder of Dutch history and traditions.

NOTES ON WENTELTEEFJES

Bread

Traditionally, Wentelteefjes is made using leftover white bread that would otherwise go to waste. The practice of using leftover white bread is still common today when making Wentelteefjes. However, this recipe uses store-bought brioche bread – which gives the Wentelteefjes  a richer and custardy taste and texture.

Dip one slice of brioche bread fully into the thin batter, then transfer it directly to the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes on one side on medium low heat, then flip and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the bread is uniformly browned.

Transfer the wentelteefje to a plate and repeat the same steps with the remaining slices.

The resulting wentelteefjes will have a crispy outer layer and a soft, custardy inner layer. Wentelteefjes are typically cooked until small specks of burnt parts appear on them, which is normal. Don’t worry – they won’t taste bitter at all. In fact, these specks help to make the outer layer even crispier in texture. Traditionally, it is served with a sprinkling of sugar or icing sugar, but drizzle of honey or maple syrup works just as well!

Enjoy!
